Our half day LactaHub Symposium introduces an innovative approach using social science and business strategies for planning an effective breastfeeding campaign in support of strategic WHO and UNICEF goals.

The approach is currently developed in a research project co-hosted by the University of the Western Cape, the University of Pretoria and the Department of Science and Technology at the National Research Centre of Excellence in Food Security. The project is aligned with the WHO strategic goals for improvement of the WHO Code legislation as outlined in the 2022 WHO and UNICEF report: How the marketing of formula milk influences our decisions on infant feeding.

The approach has the potential to serve as a general template for the systematic and ethical planning of effective health campaigns.

Participants will get insights in the development process of this novel method and discuss benefits, risks and potential levers for effective health campaigns. All participants will get a digital certificate after the LactaHub Symposium via email.

Benefits of Breastfeeding and Breastmilk:

Breastfeeding is linked with multiple benefits for mothers, children, families, and society. However, breastfeeding practice is suboptimal, globally, and is limited by diverse barriers across all levels of society. Deliberate actions are necessary to promote, protect and support optimal breastfeeding.

2022 WHO and UNICEF Report: How the marketing of formula milk influences our decisions on infant feeding (22 February 2022):

Despite global evidence for the lifelong benefits of breastfeeding and a progressive health policy environment, countries all over the world are challenged with suboptimal breastfeeding rates. The 2022 WHO and UNICEF report reveals the marketing strategies of the formula industry, highlights the impact on breastfeeding behavior, and outlines opportunities for actions.
