Call for Doctoral Consortium

IFIP WG 9.4 invites doctoral candidates to submit extended abstracts for participation in the doctoral consortium program.

Aims

The doctoral consortium aims to:

  • Provide a platform for doctoral candidates to engage with peers and established, senior, academics on their research.
  • Provide participants with the opportunity to establish and expand their academic and professional networks.
  • Foster a community of support and mentorship for doctoral candidates.

Scope

Doctoral candidates, whose work has progressed to the stage where they have obtained early or initial results, are especially invited to apply. Work in the proposal stage where a formal proposal has been completed will also be considered. Topics relating to the themes of the conference are encouraged, but other areas of Computing research (CS, IS, IT) are also welcome.

Format

The envisioned format for the consortium is a combination of invited talks or workshops, panel discussions, and breakaway sessions in smaller groups, led by senior academics, to present and discuss the candidates’ research. Candidates are expected to prepare a 20 min presentation, followed by a group discussion on their work. After the breakaway sessions, a panel discussion and feedback session will be held to summarise the key points of the group discussions.

Candidates are also expected to create an A1 sized poster that highlights the key aspects of their work. The posters will be displayed in a common area of the venue and provide candidates with the opportunity to have further discussions of their work with the wider community of participants at the consortium.

Application submission

Submissions of extended abstracts (max 1000 words, excl. bibliography) must be sent by email to dirk.snyman@uct.ac.za. Please indicate submissions as “Submission - IFIP 9.4 Doctoral Consortium” in the subject line.

Submissions will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the conference with specific reference to the quality of the work, relative to the current stage of the research.

Each submission should include the following:

  • Title
  •  Introduction
    • Contextual Background
    • Problem Statement
    • Main Research Question
  • Conceptual Background/Theoretical Framework
  • Research Methodology
    • Philosophical stance (e.g. Positivist, Interpretivist, etc.)
