SOLAS Code of Conduct

The SOLAS OSC follows guidelines set in the SOLAS Code of Conduct. The SOLAS community has adopted a Code of Conduct to communicate our common understanding of basic values and rules for respectful cooperation and communication at national and international levels.

These guidelines should apply to everyone, regardless of their level or field of experience, gender, age, national origin or nationality, cultural background, race, religious creed, sexual orientation, family status and health condition.

Zero tolerance for unjust treatment and harassment

Everyone shall be treated equally and fairly. Specific individual requirements such as different levels of experience, various contract situations and family obligations should be taken into consideration in our dealings with and expectations of each other. Discrimination, intimidation and sexual harassment are not tolerated under any circumstances in any working environment, including fieldwork and research cruises. Everyone shall be free to speak up, without fear, about inappropriate and unjust behaviour or make use of the formal (anonymous) channels provided by their respective institutions. Physical intimidation and bullying behaviour is unacceptable in all circumstances.

Career development

We actively promote career development at all levels by supporting professional training and personal development. Early career scientists at the doctoral level are encouraged to enrol in graduate schools and post-docs in existing peer-networks to receive training and structured career support. Career development support is expected from supervisors, mentors, principal investigators and all other scientists in leading positions.

Consequences and reporting unacceptable behaviour

Anyone requested to stop unacceptable behaviour is expected to comply immediately. SOLAS or LOC staff or security may take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal from the event without warning or refund.
